Early Life and Education
Misty Elizabeth May-Treanor was born on July 30th, 1977 in Los Angeles, California. Raised in an athletic family, Misty’s parents were successful athletes themselves, with her mother being a nationally ranked tennis player and her father being part of the 1968 men’s national volleyball team. Growing up on the beaches of California, Misty developed a love for volleyball at an early age, playing with her family.
By the age of 8, Misty participated in her first beach volleyball tournament alongside her father. Her passion for athletics extended beyond volleyball as she also excelled in soccer, tennis, and dance. It was during this time that Misty’s babysitter happened to be Karch Kiraly, a future national volleyball player and head coach, who further influenced her athletic journey.
However, Misty faced personal challenges growing up due to her parents’ struggle with alcoholism. Her mother’s violent behavior encouraged Misty to live with her grandparents for extended periods during her childhood. Her father’s near-fatal DUI incident led him to seek sobriety. Despite the family struggles, Misty persevered and continued to pursue excellence in athletics.
While attending high school in Costa Mesa, Misty’s athletic prowess shone through as she led her volleyball team to win the state championship in 1992 and 1994. Alongside volleyball, Misty also stood out on the track team, particularly in high jump. Her exceptional skills garnered her multiple accolades and awards at a young age.
Following her high school graduation, Misty earned a spot at California State University. During her college years, she captained the volleyball team and led them to an undefeated season in 1998. Her remarkable performances earned her National Player of the Year Awards in 1997 and 1998. In 2004, Misty received her Bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and fitness.
Misty’s thirst for knowledge and continual growth led her to pursue a master’s degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University after her retirement from professional volleyball.
Misty May-Treanor’s professional career began in 1999 when she joined the AVP tour during her senior year of college. After graduating from California State, she initially played for the United States women’s national volleyball team but quickly redirected her focus solely to beach volleyball. Joining forces with fellow player Holly McPeak, Misty’s talent on the sand became evident as they placed 9th at the FIVB tour in Brazil.
In 200, May-Treanor teamed up with Kerri Walsh for the first time, and their partnership proved to be a winning formula. Together, they won numerous tournaments and gained valuable experience on the international FIVB tour. By 2002, they became champions, and by 2003, they had an outstanding record of 52 wins and just 4 losses.
Walsh and May’s pinnacle moment arrived at the Summer Olympics in 2004, where they claimed gold after defeating Americans Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs in the semifinals and a Brazilian team in the finals. Their dominance was exemplified by not losing a single set throughout the entire tournament. The duo continued to garner success on the FIVB and AVP tours, further solidifying their place in beach volleyball history.
The partnership between May-Treanor and Walsh reached new heights at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where they once again clinched the gold medal, this time defeating China in front of a global audience. This remarkable achievement made them the first beach volleyball team to secure two consecutive Olympic gold medals. Misty’s performance earned her the Most Outstanding Player award.
After the Beijing Olympics, the duo faced challenges on the AVP Tour, experiencing unexpected defeats that tarnished their previously flawless record. Walsh Jennings took a break from competitive play to give birth to a child, leaving May-Treanor to find another teammate. Ultimately, in 2012, May-Treanor and Walsh Jennings joined forces for one final triumph.
In an emotional swan song, Misty and Kerri claimed their third consecutive Olympic gold at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. This historic victory marked the end of an era as Misty retired from professional sports on a high note after capturing her final gold medal alongside her legendary partner.
