Neukom kickstarted his legal career as a clerk for the King County Superior Court in Seattle. He then joined the law firm Shilder, McBroom, Gates & Lucas, where he began his association with Microsoft during its early days. Neukom soon became Microsoft’s lead counsel, defending their legal property rights for almost 25 years and eventually rising to the position of Executive Vice President.
In 2004, Neukom became Chair of Preston Gates & Ellis. His legal expertise and dedication earned him recognition in the American Bar Association, where he served as President from 2007 to 2008.
