Following his graduation, Mackie briefly attended Pasadena City College and Chouinard Art Institute.
While studying at Chouinard Art Institute, Mackie had the privilege of learning from renowned fashion design department head Eva Roberts. Inspired by her teachings and determined to embrace a career in fashion, he left college early to pursue opportunities in the industry.
Mackie’s career took off when he was discovered by Paramount costumer Edith Head in the early 196s. Impressively, he worked as a sketch artist for Jean Louis, an Academy Award-winning fashion designer known for creating captivating gowns worn by Marlene Dietrich during her time as a cabaret singer.
