Shannon’s radio career began while serving in the Army at WFBS in Spring Lake, North Carolina. He then moved on to work at WCLS in Columbus, Georgia, and later took a full-time position at WABB in Mobile, Alabama, where he gained recognition as ‘Super Shan.’
After a brief stint at WMPS in Memphis, Shannon made his mark as an evening disc jockey at Nashville’s WMAK. He eventually became the station’s program director and even had an interview recorded with Neil Young for Young’s 1973 movie ‘Journey Through the Past.’
In pursuit of new opportunities, Shannon left Tennessee and became a record promoter for Casablanca Records. During this time, he formed a musical duo named Wildfire and released an album with Jack Grochmal. Their cover of Jerry Keller’s 1959 song ‘Here Comes Summer’ reached #49 on the ‘Billboard’ Hot 100 chart.
Returning to radio, Shannon landed at WPGC-FM in Washington, D.C., where he played a key role in the station reaching the top position in the Arbitron ratings as program director. Later, he moved to Atlanta’s WQXI followed by Tampa’s WRBQ-FM (Q105).
