Steven Yeun's Quotes
- If you work in Chicago in the improv scene, anyone is happy for you if you get a job.
- I'm stupidly curious. I will go and touch anything until I find out that it's very harmful.
- I'm not much of a horror fan. When it comes to ghost stuff and demon stuff, I can't watch that.
- I'm good at keeping secrets, but if it's not something super serious I usually tell people not to tell me because I'll tell someone else.
- I was raised in a Christian household and heard a lot of praise music, so that's what helps me get to an emotional place.

Biography
What is Steven Yeun known for?
Born in Seoul, South Korea, Steven Yeun moved to Canada when he was five years old. Later the family relocated to the US but little did they know that Steven would become a famous Hollywood actor, writer, and producer, but he is widely recognized for his portrayal of Glenn in ‘The Walking Dead’.
Early life and education
Yeun was born to Je and Jun Yeun on December 21, 1983. He grew up speaking Korean primarily, and he lived in Regina, Saskatchewan for what must have been a very different and interesting childhood; he moved to Michigan shortly after that. Yeun attended Ruth M. Buck Elementary School and graduated from Troy High School in Michigan in 2001. He then went on to further his education at Kalamazoo College, where he studied psychology with a concentration in neuroscience and earned his bachelor’s degree in 2005.
While attending Kalamazoo College, Steven became interested in acting after being introduced to an improv show by a friend who happened to be the sister of comedian Jordan Klepper. His interest grew because of that experience, leading him to study acting and joining the reputable sketch-comedy troupe, The Second City in Chicago.
Career
In 2005 after college, he moved to Chicago and became a part of the Asian American sketch comedy troup called ‘Stir Friday Night!.’ Later he joined Second City Improv where he polished his skills further. In 2009, Yeun moved to Los Angeles and continued to pursue his acting career, ultimately becoming a part of cult-favorite ‘The Walking Dead.’
His performance as Glenn Rhee in ‘The Walking Dead’ won the hearts of many fans and is said to have pioneered an aligned relationship between fans and TV show characters. His portrayal lasted for six seasons, crediting his screen presence for lending the show more depth. In 2016, Yeun confirmed that he was leaving the show after a fan-favorite character was killed off.
After finishing his time on ‘The Walking Dead’, Steven appeared in various episodes of other popular TV series such as ‘Law & Order: LA,’ ‘Warehouse 13,’ ‘NTSF: SD: SUV,’ and ‘Drunk History.’
Upon leaving ‘The Walking Dead’ Steven started working on other exciting projects. In March of 2016, he accepted the role of Derek Cho in Joe Lynch’s action horror film, ‘Mayhem,’ released in November of 2017. In 2017, Bong Joon-ho cast him in his action-adventure film, ‘Okja,’ which was released the same year and competed for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He also voiced Bo in “The Star” released same year.
Personal Life
Despite being a famous Hollywood star, Yeun is notoriously private with his personal life. In December of 2016, the actor announced his marriage to director Joana Pak on social media via a photo of the couple, which immediately went viral.
He and Joana Pak have one daughter together. The couple has two dogs named Penny and Xanax

Yeun has been labeled by ‘Esquire Magazine’ as one of the “Nine Breakout Stars of 2011.” Variety Magazine named him one of their “Top Ten Actors to Watch” in June of 2012.
Apart from acting, Steven serves as a very active arts and activism advocate. He volunteered with 826LA and East West Players while in LA, also teaching classes around the world. He also participated in the Kollaboration movement giving speeches, supporting undocumented students via the KACPAH program, and serving on the advisory board for the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment. Yeun is also part of an organization called Stir Fridays made up of Asian, actors, and writers who perform a variety of sketches that leverage their pain, past challenges and socio-economic hardship stories for comedic effect.
